About Jombang City, East Java, Indonesia

Jombang is a county located in the central part of East Java Province. Its area is 1159.50 km ² [2], and the population 1,201,557 people (2010), consists of 597 219 men and 604 338 women. Jombang city center is located in the middle of the district, has a height of 44 meters above sea level, and within 79 km (1.5 hours drive) from the southwestern city of Surabaya, the capital of East Java Province. Jombang has a very strategic position, because it is located at the intersection of cross lines south of Java (Surabaya, Jogjakarta-Madison), line-Tulungagung Surabaya and Malang-Tuban pathway. [3]

Jombang also known as the City Students List, because of the many schools of Islamic education (boarding school) in the region. [4] There is even a proverb that says Jombang is the center of the boarding school in Java, as nearly all the founders of pesantren in Java must have studied at Jombang. Among the famous boarding school is Tebuireng, Denanyar, Rice Pond, and the Darul Ulum (Rejoso).

Many famous personalities who were born in Jombang Indonesia, among them the former President of Indonesia, namely KH Abdurrahman Wahid, a national hero KH and KH Wahid Hashim Hashim Ash'ari, Nurcholis Madjid Islamic intellectual and cultural Emha Ainun Najib, and artists Espe Cucuk.

That said, the word is an acronym of Jombang Javanese word that is IJO (Indonesia: Hijau; UK: Green) and ABANG (Indonesia: Merah; UK: Red). Representing the students Ijo (religious), and brother represent the abangans (nationalist / kejawen). Both groups lived harmoniously side by side and in Jombang. In fact both these elements is described in the basic color symbol Jombang Regency. [5]
